(Part 2) Adapting a few things is in your interest to aid your mental wellbeing

From experience, these are my 5 tips that have helped me to think clearer and pushed me through the tough times so if you’re having a bad day or week, try a few and see if they help!

If you haven’t seen my article prior to this one, as much as all these tips will seem pretty obvious, they are the main ways that I cleared my head and started to think more positively after being down for a while due to a few things going on in my personal life.

By all means just take them with a pinch of salt, but it is what worked for me so could help you too (:

  • Have more sleep and improve your sleeping pattern. It should be a priority!

The more you regulate the hours you sleep the more relaxed and calm you will feel when you wake up each morning and before you go to bed if you get into a routine. Sleep enables your body and mind to function and perform better, your reactions will be quicker and you will be more resilient to any daily stresses that come your way.

  • Smile, be happy and have a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA)

It is always nice to make someone smile and normally, you find that if you smile at someone you will get the same response back (I’ve written normally because there will always be that one miserable person!) If you wake up to an alarm, with a plan or routine and a PMA you have a much better chance of having a successful day. Don’t get me wrong spontaneity is important, but when you have lots to do, a plan can be a good guideline and has worked for me.

  • Physical exercise is so important to alleviate stress and allow good mental health

I have spoken to a lot of people who tell me that that problem is when they feel low, they do less and have less or no motivation to do exercise which is then a vicious cycle. The same people told me they know how useful exercising is because when they DO exercise, soon after they are ready to take on anything that day and are much more positive. It is taking the first step like with anything.

Keeping active does not have to be going to the gym either, it can just be walking more, taking the stairs or doing a dance class. Exercise leads to better sleep and a PMA too.

  • Learn to let go, be thankful for what you do have and make the most of each day

It is so easy to get caught up but again I found if I acknowledged where my thoughts were heading, I would distract myself, become occupied and then I would feel better. When life is short, always live for the present as well as the future and remember all the people less fortunate cause you will soon realise how much you do have. If you have your health and a few people who give a S$*% about you that’s all you need!

  • Start something new!

Most people have something they always want to do but never make enough time for it in their busy schedule. For me it was writing and singing. For you, it could be anything from going to that yoga class you keep missing on a Thursday or having a weekly date night with your boyfriend or girlfriend for example. Whatever it is that you have been putting off or if it’s a new, recent interest, get started.
